Protecting Marlborough's Historic Charm from Floods

Flooding can wreak havoc on any property, but historic homes in Marlborough face unique challenges. With a collection of architectural gems ranging from Colonial and Greek Revival to Craftsman and Tudor Revival, these structures require special care during restoration. SERVPRO® understands the need for careful flood damage cleanup measures for safe, effective results.

Understanding Flood Damage Impact in Marlborough

Historic homes are built with materials and techniques that differ significantly from modern construction. These materials can be more susceptible to water damage, and their restoration often requires specialized knowledge.

Common Issues in Historic Homes

  • Wood Rot: Old wooden beams and floors can quickly absorb water, leading to rot and structural damage.
  • Masonry Damage: Brick and stone foundations might crack or shift due to prolonged exposure to water.
  • Mold Growth: Moisture can lead to mold, which poses health risks and further damages the structure.

Steps to Effective Restoration

When dealing with flood damage in historic homes, it's crucial to act swiftly and methodically. Here's a step-by-step:

  1. Initial Assessment: A detailed inspection helps identify the extent of damage and areas needing urgent attention.
  2. Water Extraction: Quickly removing standing water prevents further damage and minimizes mold growth.
  3. Drying and Dehumidification: We dry out affected areas using specialized equipment while preserving the integrity of historic materials.
  4. Cleaning and Sanitizing: Thorough cleaning removes contaminants, and sanitizing helps prevent mold.
  5. Restoration and Repairs: Skilled craftsmen repair or replace damaged materials, ensuring that the home's historical value is preserved.

Special Considerations for Historic Properties

  • Preservation of Original Materials: Whenever possible, original materials should be dried and restored rather than replaced.
  • Consultation with Experts: Work with professionals experienced in historic restoration to maintain the home's authenticity.
  • Documentation: Keep detailed records of damage and repairs for future reference and insurance purposes.

SERVPRO Restores Marlborough Properties after Flood Incidents

Flooding has become a more frequent occurrence. When the velocity of the floodwaters slows, it can leave behind large amounts of sand, silt, and other debris. It also leaves behind pathogenic and non-pathogenic agents. Remediation and recovery need to be undertaken quickly after a flood incident in your Marlborough home to return the area to normal and prevent secondary damages such as mold damage.

Cleaning up after flood damage in a Marlborough home can be arduous, requiring sufficient manpower and tools. Depending on the amount of water and damage caused, it could be better to find a professional to help with the work. SERVPRO has a qualified team experienced in disaster response. We respond to such situations rapidly since we have teams on standby 24/7. Flooding is likely to ruin most interior finishes and contents when left unaddressed. Our team can prevent further damage to your property by beginning cleanup promptly.

Effective restoration after a flood entails:

  • Removing any remaining floodwaters
  • Removing mud and debris
  • Salvaging personal items
  • Drying and disinfecting any wet areas or objects

When cleaning up after a flood, you need to extract the water. Though most of it would have receded, some traces remain in certain areas of your home. Also, some structural components, such as the walls, tend to absorb moisture gradually, compromising them as long as they stay waterlogged. Therefore, drying the space out and disinfecting any affected areas or items is essential.

Assessing Flood Damage

After a flood, you must assess the damage your home may have suffered. SERVPRO proceeds with caution when assessing damage after a flood, then take the necessary safety precautions before entering the house. Our teams consider the building materials in your home to know how much water they may have retained. We look for signs to tell if a structure has been altered or weakened. For example, corners that used to be 90 degrees may have been pushed to a different angle:

Other signs to look out for

  • Cracks, bulges, and sagging in floors and walls
  • Sagging ceilings
  • Cracks in your basement or foundation walls

Marlborough Wet Basement and Water Damage

6/29/2022 (Permalink)

Basement Water Damage Basement Water Proofing Helps Prevent Water Damage in Marlborough Homes

Water Seepage Results in Damages to Many Basements and Crawl Spaces

Constant drips and puddles are okay for kids playing outside, but not when they are playing in the basement. Whether it is a finished room or just a considerable crawl space, it needs to be safe and dry for the residents and property security.

A wet basement water damage in your Marlborough home may start as a nuisance, but it can become a source of mold and ruined belongings. If the room is not cleaned and dried, the growth can result in damage to property and, eventually, the structure itself. At SERVPRO, we understand how much damage water and mold can cause to a home and how to stop it.

For significant amounts of standing water, we bring portable pumps powerful enough to force water up the stairs and outside the home. When there is only a tiny amount of water, technicians draw it out using water extraction wands and even mops. These devices work well on concrete, wood floors, and carpets.

As we remove the water, SERVPRO technicians start reducing the humidity. If water has been in the basement for an extended period, humidity levels are higher than normal. To lower them, we install dehumidifiers to draw moisture out of the air at a rate of up to 25 gallons per day and commercial-grade space heaters to raise the temperature enough to help the dehumidifiers work more efficiently.

Once the basement is dry, we check for hidden leaks and cracks. If the water source is a leaking pipe, we can repair or replace it in less than a day. If there are cracks in the walls, we clean them and then fill them in using hydraulic cement. This adhesive is an excellent barrier against water. When it is dry, we cover the area and recommend covering all basement walls with a layer of masonry cement. This second type of cement is a superb seal to prevent leaks and seepage from the outside.

A wet basement is not the worst problem in your home, but you should resolve it as soon as possible. If you have it as a recurring situation, contact SERVPRO of Marlboro / Concord to help. Call us at (978) 486-9868 to schedule an initial inspection today.

Mitigtion Tubes Drainage Systems Protect Marlborough Basements and Foundations from Flooding Damages

SERVPRO Offers Solutions to Flooded and Damp Basements

As if the severe weather passing through Marlborough was not enough, improperly waterproofed foundations can allow moisture and water through cracks and mortar joints that were not full. Your basement should not be permitted to stay moist or wet, though, because several potential problems could arise.

When you have flood damage in your Marlborough home, many people weigh all of the things that they have stored in the lower levels of their home that could become irreparably damaged by the presence of pooling water. The possibility of flooding from torrential weather could be a distinct possibility if your foundation has already become compromised. Even smaller amounts of water penetrating the inside and entering your basement could spell trouble in this case.

If you notice that the walls of your foundation are wet following a moderate rain shower, this is something that you need to correct as soon as you are able. The problem with the foundation is going to get worse, as the presence of water erodes even the most durable of mortar joints without adequate waterproofing. The best thing that you can do is to call our experienced and reliable SERVPRO team of technicians to assess the problem and get to work quickly on a solution.

As you know, storms can pop up at a moment’s notice. With this being a distinct likelihood, the longer you wait to fix a foundation problem, the more wet basement issues you have. Our SERVPRO professionals can address precisely where the water is penetrating and coat the area with hydraulic cement and masonry cement to successfully stop water from getting in. Then, the restoration process involves pulling moisture from the air using dehumidifiers and thoroughly drying up the presence of any lingering water that got inside before the holes were sealed. These steps go a very long way in preventing the possibility of mold growth in the basement of your home.

Foundation leaks are not entirely uncommon in Marlborough homes, but it is something that you should address as soon as you can. Give SERVPRO of Marlboro / Concord a call. You can reach us anytime at (978) 486-9868.

SERVPRO logo Storm and flood damage restoration services by SERVPRO are second to none. Call now for fast and immediate service.

Our team understands the urgency to protect a Concord home after flood damages.

Flooding can be an overwhelming situation for area homes. Our objective is to provide fast and efficient mitigation of these situations to protect your residence as much as possible. There are several focal points to this effort.

Creating a Safe Work Environment

The utmost priority of restoring flood damage and Concord homes is creating a safe space for technicians to work and occupants to live if not displaced by the emergency. A careful and complete property evaluation identifies safety hazards like structural weaknesses, shock hazards, and possible contaminants.

Relocating Contents and Keepsakes

When your personal belongings are in the path of damage, we must work fast to relocate these items to a safer portion of the property. In some cases where floodwater damage has already occurred or exposure to contaminants threatens these possessions, off-site recovery and restoration are recommended. At our SERVPRO facility, we offer:

  • Drying
  • Surface cleaning
  • Disinfection
  • Deodorization
  • Safe storage

Water Removal Services

Clearing standing water after a flood is a priority of our SERVPRO team. Mitigating loss relies on removing pooling water and any debris or solids caught in it. This process can include tools like wet vacuums, trash pumps, and carpet wands.

Cleaning and Disinfection

Another priority of our responding technicians will be cleaning exposed services that do not require controlled demolition. Disinfection is a critical aspect of flood recovery, especially when contaminants could be present in the environment and demand the attention of qualified personnel to protect the property and its occupants.

Knowing what is most important when flood damages occur can focus restoration efforts to prioritize the needs of the customer and the property. We carefully evaluate the conditions of specific affected materials and determine the best preservation approach based on our findings. Our SERVPRO of Marlboro / Concord team is ready to help right now when you call (978) 486-9868.

Eliminating Floodwater in Low-Accessibility Areas of Marlborough Homes

11/26/2021 (Permalink)

Storm water removal Storm damage restoration services by SERVPRO are second to none. 24/7 365 days a year we are here for you.

Our SERVPRO team has extraction and mitigation solutions for challenging flood damage in Marlborough properties.

There are several familiar places in a Marlborough home that can suffer flood damage. As overwhelming as natural disasters might be, we can provide fast and efficient service wherever the affected area might be.

Attic Flood Damage Removal

When flood damage to Marlborough homes occurs in the attic, this often indicates roof damage and repairs needed. Removing standing water that results from these vulnerabilities can use multiple approaches such as:

  • High-pressure pumps
  • Wet vacuums
  • Toweling

Clearing Floodwater from Unused Basements

Basements are the lowest space in the house, making them likely candidates for pulling floodwater when natural disasters occur. Addressing these concerns begins with choosing the appropriate extraction device to overcome pooling water on the concrete floors. Not only does our team have to manage the efficient removal of water, but we must also overcome the distance to reach this lower level of the house without a reduction and discharge force. This process relies on tools like:

  • Truck-mount pumps
  • Trash pumps
  • Wet vacuums

Extracting from Low-Clearance Crawlspaces

Crawlspaces can be a common place for flood damage as well, as this small opening beneath the main floor of your house can be an ideal penetration point for rising floodwater. Removing the water from this limited area can be challenging and ultimately require a combination of extraction devices like truck-mount pumps with attachments and wet vacuums for more inaccessible areas.

There are many confined or challenging spaces that could slow efficient restoration and mitigation of flood damage. We can address these concerns quickly and mitigate loss for homes and businesses with the appropriate equipment and tools. Our SERVPRO of Marlboro / Concord team is ready to help 24/7 at (978) 486-9868.

Cleaning Up Standing Water in the Basement of Marlborough Homes Requires Immediate Action.

Flooding is not uncommon for homes in the New England area, so we keep experienced SERVPRO professionals ready to respond to storm damage and flood concerns 24/7. Our team of accredited water restoration technicians can mobilize fast to protect your home when every minute counts.

Identifying Structural Vulnerabilities After Flooding

Because flood damage in Marlborough homes can overwhelm the property quickly when penetrating foundation walls and masonry, the initial inspection of the house can show where repairs and build-back are needed. We can seal small vulnerabilities with hydraulic cement and assess if a greater reconstruction effort is necessary to fully address the problem.

Removing Water from Basement Floors

Extraction can be a much-needed process after flooding, as much of the water involved comes to rest on the flooring of the basement level. Deep extraction tools target surface water concerns greater than a few inches in depth. Wet-vacuuming with light wands can complete the removal of standing water to begin vital drying efforts.

Protecting Contents Stored in the Basement Level

So many homes throughout the Greater New England area have basements that double as house storage for items rarely needed. Contents in the basement level require relocation or cleaning to present irreparable harm when exposed to flooding conditions. When on-site cleaning or relocation is not possible, we have a facility nearby for:

  • Drying
  • Surface Cleaning
  • Deodorization
  • Safe Storage

Flooding can be a devastating event targeting multiple homes in the area simultaneously. With the magnitude of these natural disasters, swift action is often necessary to mitigate loss and protect what matters most. Our SERVPRO of Marlboro / Concord team is ready to help 24/7 to make it "Like it never even happened," at (978) 486-9868.

SERVPRO Gives Tips and Flood Damage Cleanup to Concord Homeowners

Floods can develop slowly, making a homeowner feel helpless as they watch. Water begins spreading over land when rivers and waterways overfill, gaining access to homes caught within the floodplain.

There are several types of flooding that might affect your Concord area home. Flood damage affects your home and its surrounding environment, occurring any time of the year. Severe storms can even bring flash floods to the area that give you little to no warning and cause massive damage.

Floodwater itself can be highly hazardous, taking as little as 6 inches of fast-flowing water to knock a full-grown human off their feet. A flood can disrupt public and personal transportation by cutting off roads, railways and even cutting communication lines by destroying telephone poles and other equipment.

Floods carry large amounts of water and anything they can over large areas, displacing soil nutrients and eroding agricultural lands. Severe floods do far more than ruin homes or destroy personal property. The environment and wildlife in the area are also at risk. What can you do?

It would help if you always took the time to understand more about where you live. If your home lies within a floodplain, never take chances and get your family to safety at the first signs of a flood. Watch your local news station for notifications, and prepare your home for the event. Do you have a distinct flood insurance policy?

Emergency Contacts During Flood Damage

Keep a list of emergency phone numbers; your personal or house phone may stop working, get lost, or be damaged. Make sure to have numbers ready for when you reach safety. Prepare every member of your family by practicing an escape plan. Bring plenty of supplies, medication, and food. Call SERVPRO to stop by and offer our ERP, Emergency READY Profile mobile app to help you prepare for possible emergencies, and then we are only a call away to help.

With your family safe and the event coming to an end, make preparations with your local SERVPRO to re-enter your home as soon as possible. You want to immediately save the contents of your home and any personal belongings left behind.

SERVPRO can help you prepare your home to combat flood damage, providing you with expertly IICRC certified-trained technicians, access to advanced equipment and services that help prevent damages. However, in the event of a flood, it is also essential to have someone there to help you recover, and that is where we come in.

SERVPRO Extracts Standing Water Post Flooding Swiftly

Removing water from your home is a relatively simple task when it comes to pumping or extracting. The problems are usually timing and labor. When that water is contaminated, the costs and threats to your home and personal health quickly increase.

When it comes to restoring your Concord home and property from the effects of flood damage, SERVPRO looks for one of three categories of water: Clean, Gray, and Black. We maintain a 24-hour response team to determine the category and determine what is needed to clean and restore your home.

Clean Water: This type of floodwater poses no substantial risk to the health of the residents or our technicians. The restoration crews do not have to take any precautions before bringing in pumps or other water extraction tools to remove standing water or water trapped on carpets, floors, building material such as drywall, and personal property. To prevent clean water from crossing into the gray water category, we remove it as quickly as possible. Microbes present on surfaces and in the air are harmless until they have even a small amount of standing water to collect in and grow. Our technicians also begin work to lower the humidity level; drier air inhibits microbial growth as well.

Gray Water: This category contains low levels of contamination that can threaten the health of residents and anyone else who is exposed to it. Contaminants include water from aquariums, urine, and wash water. Gray water becomes more contaminated very quickly with fungi or bacteria. Spores from these threats can become airborne and spread to parts of the home not affected by water. If unchecked, the spores grow into building material as well as become a health threat. To prevent this, technicians spray the water with an antifungal or antimicrobial agent before bringing in water extraction equipment.

Black Water: This is the most contaminated water. Most stormwater falls into this category, as run-off or water from a crested river also pulls in feces, sewage, and even dead animals from the outside. Contamination levels also depend on how far the water traveled before it entered your home. Other contaminants can include chemical and medical waste. Technicians don protective gear and spray black water before utilizing pumps. Our crews carefully watch every hose connection and ensure no leaks as they pump contaminated water into a holding tank or tank truck.

Restoring a home to its pre-flood state can be complicated and expensive. SERVPRO of Marlboro / Concord is here to help our neighbors and fellow residents return to their everyday life as soon as we can. Call us today at (978) 486-9868 to begin.

Need Help With Flood Restoration in Your Concord Home?

Concord, Massachusetts, sits only 20 miles west of Boston, and it is known as a gorgeous town that represents New England's history. The city's claim to fame is that it is where the first battle of the Revolutionary War took place. The world-renowned "Shot heard 'round the world" took place in Concord.

A town with plenty of history

Concord was an established town well before the Revolutionary War giving it a vast amount of history. Visitors can find the following historical landmarks in the city:

Professional disinfecting companies like SERVPRO can help after a flood.

If a flood ever occurs in Concord, it is possible that water can enter your home from the ground. If this happens, muddy waters are considered a category three situation, and it is treated the same as a sewage backup. Black category three moisture is most likely contaminated, so hazmat companies like SERVPRO can use the following ways to apply disinfectants:

  • We can use a board spectrum disinfectant registered by the EPA, such as Sporicidin, Vanquish, or Microban, when conducting water damage remediation.
  • During flood restoration, we mix products to the dilution levels recommended by the manufacturer.
  • As a part of water damage repairs, we also use methods to apply the correct quantity to the affected surfaces.

If you ever notice water enter your home from the ground after a storm, call SERVPRO of Marlboro / Concord at (978) 486-9868.

Burst Pipes or Natural Disasters Can Lead to Significant Damage in your Marlborough Home

10/31/2020 (Permalink)

flood damaged home - image of boots on wet floor A flooded basement can harm cavities, flooring, and your contents.

SERVPRO Provides Flood Cleanup for Basements and Crawlspaces to Marlborough Residents.

Why do basements become flooded?
Below ground level rooms in your Marlborough home are more susceptible to the damaging effects of a flood. Often centralized water systems are located in cellars or basements while being below ground level can make them more at risk of groundwater flooding. Natural disasters can also overload sump pumps or other water extraction equipment resulting in pools of standing water. When your home suffers these events, it is vital to contact a restoration professional as soon as possible. Water can cause extensive and irreparable harm if it is left in a basement for too long. SERVPRO operates locally and can mobilize qualified restorers to get rid of standing water, dry the structure, and restore contents. You can contact us twenty-four hours a day on our emergency call line.

Are concrete floors resistant to flooding?
Hard floors may seem resilient, but it is still essential that you enlist professional flood cleanup of the basement in your Marlborough home if it floods. Concretes with a painted finish can disintegrate or blister under the presence of moisture. In properties built during the seventies and earlier, these paints could contain lead and be avoided by a homeowner with flooding issues. Concrete floors are also porous, allowing moisture to permeate the material, leaving behind calcium deposits and providing ideal mold growth conditions. Our roster of technicians includes qualified lead-based paint activities and renovation technicians (RRRP) who can safely assess and dispose of these sensitive materials. Our water restoration technicians can dry floors as quickly as possible (this typically takes days) and apply anti-microbial chemicals to prevent further the buildup of fungi, bacteria, or viruses in your basement.

Do restoration services communicate with homeowners?
    •    Our technicians always explain the necessary steps for restoring your home and how we aim to return it to its preloss condition.
    •    Crew chiefs regularly review scoping, pre-testing, and monitoring reports during restoration to provide real-time estimates for restoration length.
    •    We can answer all pertinent questions regarding restoration outcomes and your insurance estimate before and during a cleanup service.

Are restoration services available at all-hours?
There is nothing worse than waking up at night to find a burst pipe or leak in your home. Standing water can accumulate quickly, while the length of time building materials have exposure to moisture can be critical to their repairability. Our local technicians operate out of hours to help homeowners in an emergency. We take customer service seriously and arrive quickly at a job site to provide expert opinions on the extent of water damage. Our priority is to shut off the source of moisture then immediately begin water extraction and pumping. From there, a full inspection takes place, which is recorded and can be included in your insurance estimate. Reducing standing water is a crucial factor in reducing the timeframe and costs of returning a property to its preloss condition. We can ensure that your basement remains safe throughout the restoration and that high usage spaces, such as kitchens or bathrooms, are restored first if you are staying on the property.

What safety measures are put in place at a flooded property?
    •    Safeguarding your home against electrical hazards by inspecting the wiring and using Ground Flow Circuit Interrupters (GFCI) on all electrical equipment.
    •    Assessing the condition of ceilings or flooring to ensure it is not prone to collapse under additional water weight, equipment, or personnel.
    •    Correcting subfloor issues to guarantee safety and that they have not deteriorated to a dangerous level.

How does clean water flooding occur?
One of the most common damage scenarios for flooding can be a burst pipe or leak. These water mains run throughout a home but may also lack necessary insulation or usage to protect them from bursting. A basement area, for example, typically contains less insulation than other areas of the house. If the property is vacated for some time, you may find that water in pipes freezes, causing the lines to expand. Expansion inside pipes can result in splitting or bursting with potentially hundreds of gallons of water being expelled into the property. Fortunately, clean water emergencies are less severe than those caused by natural disasters or groundwater flooding.  We can often recover large amounts of your possessions and restore the building assembly materials, providing that the water category is stage one. Clean waters can still deteriorate over-time, which is why contacting professional restorers at the earliest opportunity is essential.

What emergency mitigation is practical for burst pipes in the basement?
    •    Extracting water from the floor and subfloor using a squeegee wand extractor attached to either a portable unit or truck-mount.
    •    Assess potential vapor barriers in the home and ventilate warm, dry air into water cavities to prevent further harm.
    •    Take temperature and relative humidity readings from the affected area, unaffected areas, and outdoor air to provide a drying goal for the restoration.

A flooded basement can harm cavities, flooring, and your contents. Contact SERVPRO of Marlboro / Concord at (978) 486-9868.

How Can I Reduce Standing Water in my Home?

SERVPRO is a Leading Floodwater Extraction Specialist for Marlborough Residents Operating Twenty- Four Hours a Day.

Are floodwaters a safety concern?

Flooding occurs periodically in Marlborough due to extreme weather patterns. The type of flooding that can commonly affect your home is often the result of heavy rainfall, which can raise groundwater and river tables. Once these tables reach a saturation point, residential areas may be affected by flash flooding. Unfortunately, flash flooding can bring dangerous pathogens into your home, so you should contact a professional flood technician to carry out the extraction procedure. Contaminated floodwaters, known as blackwater, could contact herbicides, pesticides, animal carcasses, microbial bacteria, and viruses on route to your property. With floodwater intrusion, it is critical to wear the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) and have experience dealing with biohazardous substances.

Can floodwaters be disposed of in sewers?

There may be local regulation that prevents floodwater extraction from being deposited into Marlborough waterways. Our technicians are well-versed in the legislature and can ensure that any waste-water disposal is responsible and legal. In these situations are team may rely on a truck-mounted water storage tank to transport standing water away from your property to a facility where it can be disposed of correctly. Using pumping equipment alongside extractors, we can ensure the complete removal of any excess water from your property. The procedure to remove initial standing water can take up to a full day, while the average restoration of the flooded property is two to five days.

What causes floodwater intrusion?

- Heavy, persistent rainfall which can enter through the roof or gutters of your building

- Road overflow when city drainage systems become overloaded

- River overflow or dam busts which can lead to flash flooding

- Groundwater flooding

For time-efficient and safe floodwater removal, contact SERVPRO of Marlboro / Concord at (978) 486-9868.

How Can I Mitigate Storm-Related Flood Damage?

5/29/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO equipment on shelves in a warehouse. When storms wreak havoc Marlborough, call SERVPRO we will be right there.

You Can Mitigate Storm-Related Flood Damage in Marlborough by Taking a Few Precautionary Steps and Calling a Good Remediation Service Provider Like SERVPRO.

New England is famous for its strong coastal storms that wreak havoc on the region every year.  This severe weather, which can occur at any time of the year, impacts Marlborough and causes a great deal of damage in our local area.  While this common yearly weather is bad enough, sometimes a “perfect storm” passes through and brings with it massive flooding that deluges our small city.  Since our area is prone to this kind of weather, local home and business owners should always prepare for potential storms in advance.  When a disaster does strike, they need to contact a good flood damage remediation service, like SERVPRO, as soon as possible.

What Makes SERVPRO an Excellent Flood Damage Cleaning and Remediation Service?

As a local resident, you should research Marlborough’s flood damage cleaning and remediation services before disaster strikes.  When examining the various companies handing this kind of damage, some really stand out.  Businesses like SERVPRO offer numerous fast and cost-effective home-saving services, including:

  • Standing water removal, using truck-mounted extractors, portable extractors, and wet vacs
  • Professional disposal of hazardous waste and water
  • Expert disinfecting and cleaning of affected surfaces to hinder harmful fungi and bacteria growth
  • Scientific drying of interiors with dehumidifiers, air movers, strong fans, injectidry systems, and high-tech detection equipment like moisture meters and sensors
  • Odor removal with sprayers and foggers

Finding a good, reliable flood damage restoration company before storms hit makes it much easier to recover after they have passed.  Undoubtedly, doing this saves you time, money, and heartache in the long run.

What Precautionary Steps Can You Take to Secure Your Home Before a Storm?

As previously noted, a key way you can limit storm damage to your Marlborough residence is to adequately prepare your home beforehand.  This has been made easier in recent years by advancements in weather forecasting.  Forecasts often give homeowners a few days warning before big storms.  Once you become aware of a storm’s approach, these are some measures you can take to limit potential flood damage:

  • Shut off electricity, gas, and water utility switches/valves before you leave your house prior to a storm.  This simple measure protects your property from further damage and others from gas explosions and electrical shocks.
  • Repair and seal any foundation damage.  This repair work helps prevent floodwaters from entering the ground floor of your home.
  • Ensure that your roof is in good condition, and your gutters are clean.  These measures help safeguard against leaks and related water damage.
  • Properly cover your windows with storm shutters or plywood.  By doing so, powerful storm winds and airborne objects are less likely to break your windows and allow rainwater to enter your home.
  • Divert flood waters away from your residence with strategically-placed sandbags.

In doing these things, homeowners might be able to largely avoid major flood damage.  However, nature is never a hundred percent predictable, and trying to defend against it is rarely completely effective.

If Floodwaters Damage My Marlborough Home, What Can SERVPRO Do?

Our technicians in Marlborough are trained and experienced in mitigating and cleaning up catastrophic flood damage.  This is done with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-approved disinfectants, high-quality deodorants, and the most advanced equipment available in the industry.  The process our professionals generally take to return your home to pre-flood condition is as follows:

  • Arrival at your home, in most cases, within four hours of your call
  • Removal of standing floodwaters with submersible pumps and extractors
  • Clean up and disposal of hazardous flood wastes
  • Disinfection of affected surfaces with EPA-approved disinfectants
  • Drying the interior of your home with dehumidifiers, air movers, and connected injectidry systems
  • Periodically measuring moisture levels in the air and interior materials with thermohygrometers and moisture meters/sensors
  • Ensuring that they have effectively completed all interior drying by reaching a pre-established drying goal
  • Deodorization/odor sealing with high-quality deodorants or paint

Usually, once this process is complete, our customers are pleasantly surprised by the results.  Our technicians are often able to save your home and limit overall flood-related damage.  Also, their efforts help safeguard your house from future issues, like harmful microbial growth, dry rot, and bad odors.  At the same time, SERVPRO can often save you time and money.

Although you live in an area prone to powerful storms and flood-related damage, you don’t have to live in fear of these things.  There are actions you can take to protect yourself and recover from these problems if you are ever unfortunate enough to encounter them.  Properly prepare your home before every major storm to limit effects from them.  Then, if you do need help recovering from a flood, call SERVPRO of Marlboro / Concord at (978) 486-9868 for assistance.

I Need My Wet Basement in Marlborough Dryied and Protected After a Storm, What Can SERVPRO Do for Us?

5/9/2020 (Permalink)

Standing water that is backed up to a yellow home. If your basement suffers from a major or minor flooding event, pick up the phone and call SERVPRO for successful drying services.

Our Technicians Will Investigate ALL of the Causes of Your Wet Basement After a Storm, Before Commencing With the Remediation Process.

Marlborough and our part of Massachusetts went through an incredible amount of extreme weather this year, and the upcoming winter is not expected to be any milder right now. Problems and damage not completed repaired or restored can resurface after the first heavy rain.

Many homeowners found themselves with a wet basement in Marlborough after a storm last year. If the water level was low, many of them used a water-vac to remove it and then let everything air dry as best as possible. At SERVPRO, we understand that this does not solve the problem, only push it back for more water intrusion later.

With the next storm, more water finds its way into the basement. After one of our restoration teams arrive, they start with two tasks, remove the water and determine how it entered the basement.

They start removal with a commercial grade pump to remove any water higher than ankle-deep. Depending on the area of the basement, this can take a few hours to a day or two. If there are any carpets on the floor, team members next use extraction wands to draw out the water and then remove the carpets to dry outside. If there is a pad underneath them, they dispose of it immediately.

With the water gone, a SERVPRO inspector carefully checks the walls and floor for cracks and seepage points. Some of these can be as small as the tip of a pencil, so the inspection takes a long time. In some cases, a seep does not show until enough water comes through to reveal a damp patch.

Technicians fill any cracks and seep with hydraulic cement to seal them off. Next, they coat the walls and the floor if needed with a layer of masonry cement. It adheres tightly to concrete and forms an excellent barrier against further water intrusion.

If there are a large number of cracks inside the basement, then there are usually larger cracks in the outside walls. To protect the basement and the foundation, we recommend allowing our team to dig out around the foundation, expose the walls, and cover them with a thick, liquid rubber compound. It seals the entire concrete surface and does not leak unless there is physical damage that separates the blocks.

Flooding, Water Extraction, and Drying--Call SERVPRO

Marlborough has had fewer storms this year, but it is not over yet. Winter weather can tear into a home from top to bottom, causing storm damage issues at every level.

After a storm, a Marlborough wet basement usually means there is more damage than just floodwater. There was a pathway for enough of it to get in and leave more water than a mop and a shop-vac can handle. SERVPRO technicians are trained to remove the water, find out how it got in, and lower the risk of a flood happening again.

If the water level is more than ankle high, we bring in a commercial grade pump to remove it. Even in a larger home, we can clear the excessive in a single morning or afternoon. For lower levels of water, we bring in water extraction wands and other suctioning devices. These devices are designed to draw water off of floors and out of carpets without harming the surface or tearing up the nape. Contaminated water always plays a role in salvaging materials.

As SERVPRO technicians remove the water, one of our inspectors determines how it got in. Since the problem appeared after a storm, the inspector looks at the foundation walls which make up the basement for seepage points and cracks. Cracks are easy to spot, but a seepage point often looks like any other patch of rough surface on the exposed cinder blocks.

To seal and cover the damage, we use hydraulic cement to fill in the cracks and seepage points. When we complete that, we cover the entire wall surfaces with masonry cement. It is a thin coating that adheres to the surface and forms a waterproof barrier.

The water should be stopped before it gets into the foundation though. Once we have the inside taken care of, the inspector moves outside the home. Our recommendation is to allow us to dig out around the home and expose the foundation walls where we perform the same inspection as we did inside. We seal any cracks and seepage points with the hydraulic cement, but we cover the outside walls with a liquid rubber compound. The only way water gets past these barriers afterward, is if there is enough damage to shift the house even partially off of its foundation walls and pad.

A wet basement is usually a minor problem, but it can become an expensive one if not dried and repaired properly. SERVPRO of Marlboro / Concord is here to help you protect your home from this and other effects of severe storms. Call us today at (978) 486-9868 for more information and to set up an inspection.

What Are Some Fundamentals to Know About Flood Damage Remediation in My Littleton Home?

5/3/2020 (Permalink)

Insulation being blown into an attic. When the insulation in your attic gets wet, problems such as mold damage can occur. Contact our team to investigate the extent of the water damage.

Heavy Rains Can Cause Flood Damage To Your Littleton Attic Due to Faulty Roofing.

Thunderstorms can bring intense winds and rains to your home, but they can become disastrous and cause flood damage inside of your home when the roof above you is sporting a hole. Over time, roofs become weathered and damaged. With enough time, those damages can become extensive and lead to holes forming as the shingles rot away. Getting your roof replaced is expensive, but pushing it off as long as possible can cause more problems, such as rain pouring through a hole and into your home.

The water from flood damage inside of your Littleton  attic soaked the insulation and wooden structure inside. Some of the water even traveled down to the structure of your house, causing bubbles to form in the paint covering the walls in your living room. In this situation, the best thing to do as quickly as possible is to call someone about the hole in your roof as well as calling for professional water damage remediation services.

When you get in touch with SERVPRO, we make sure to send our technicians to your home as quickly as possible. After a brief investigation, our technicians may decide it is best to remove the soaked insulation, especially if this is not the first time rain has gotten into your home and there is evidence of mold damage. Afterward, SERVPRO can create a drying plan and then begin to set up equipment in your attic, meant to create an ideal environment for evaporation.

SERVPRO can set up axial fans, air movers, and dehumidifiers in the attic, devices that work in conjunction to remove moisture from the air, as well as to introduce fresh and dry air to the area of impact. Where water slipped down to your living room, we can feed air blasting tubes down through the walls, from the attic, to ensure that the space between your walls is also adequately dry.

If sudden flood damage impacts your home, get help immediately. Speak with SERVPRO of Marlboro / Concord by dialing the number (978) 486-9868. Day or night, our technicians are always available to help you.

Flood Damage During Long Weekend Away Leaves Smelly Problem in Marlborough Home

3/19/2020 (Permalink)

Flooded living room We understand the need for rapid response and restoration to minimize the loss of your property. Call us right away we are available 24/7.

What It Takes for Timely Resolution of Flood Damage Incidents in Marlborough

One of the most significant issues with flood damage is the rapid cleanup need to limit the loss to the home. Water degrades quickly, and groundwater arrives in the house as a category three biohazard that is unsafe to come into contact with.

After an extended weekend away, a homeowner in Marlborough arrived to flood damage in her home. Water entered through a broken basement window and pooled on the slab floor of her unfinished basement.

Inspection for Safety and Scale of Damage

The SERVPRO techs wore personal protective gear and tested the water to determine the nature of any contaminants present. The testing tells them if they need to add antibacterial or antimicrobial-based cleaners to the restoration services. In upper levels of a home, the water typically runs downward, however, in a basement with a slab floor and cinder block and brick walls, there is nowhere lower to go.

Water Removal Methods

The techs choose from different methods of water extraction dependent on the amount of water to move out. It increases in depth quickly in a crawlspace or basement environment, and both submersible pumps and truck-mounted units pull out large amounts of water quickly. Items without contamination from the water get moved out, and things with exposure get inspected for restorability through the advanced cleaning and disinfection measures.

Drying and Readying for Reuse

Because of the lack of building materials that require removal, after water extraction, the drying phase begins quickly. The combination of air movers and dehumidification equipment dries the basement rapidly. If any efflorescence appears on the concrete or bricks, it gets wiped away during the final deep cleaning. This action also frequently eliminates any residual water odors left behind. If the loss area requires more robust odor control methods, the techs have access to an array of powerful equipment.

Prevention of Cross-Contamination

Because of the probability of airborne particulate containing pathogens or bacteria, the techs put up plastic barriers to create containment around the doorway leading to the interior of the house. They also run air scrubbers during the whole of mitigation to capture any airborne particulate.

SERVPRO of Marlboro / Concord at (978) 486-9868 cleans up and restores home with flood damage. The techs bring their extensive training, experience, and equipment to make the water loss to the home, "Like it never even happened."

Frozen Pipes In Your Marlborough Residence

frozen pipes Call (978) 486-9868 for fast service that makes it all “Like it never even happened.”

Flood Damage Caused by Frozen Pipes in Your Marlborough Residence Needs Immediate Mitigation

While many homeowners in Marlborough know that the pipes above ground can freeze, break, and flood their home, drain pipes can also do the same. This water, however, is similar to flooding from rivers and streams that overflow their banks. SERVPRO is ready to help in any scenario that causes damage to your property.

When your drains freeze below your Concord house, flood damage becomes a real possibility. Temperatures do not need to dip below zero, only a few degrees below freezing is sufficient to form a frozen mass inside a drain pipe. All or only part of your house's drains might become affected, also. Winterizing your home should include insulating lines, but sometimes this is not adequate, particularly if the temperature drops suddenly. Some drains are made of materials that heat tape can damage, forcing homeowners depend on slip-on foam insulation. Ground-up insulation can cause problems in termite-prone locations, making it necessary to use termite shielding in these areas.

Frozen water lines coming into your bathroom and kitchen let you know right away, just by turning on the faucet, that a problem exists. Drain lines, however, might make gurgling noises after you flush the toilet, run water down the sink, or take a shower. Soon, however, these quit draining due to frozen water in the drains. These can back up into your home, or cause the drain to bust open.

Industry leaders advise homeowners to let the faucet farthest from the main valve run slowly to prevent water lines from freezing, while this same advice is contrary to stopping all water from flowing through the home to prevent drain lines from freezing.

Shutting off the water to prevent inadvertent flushing, and increasing the heat in the living areas of the home is one approach that might prevent a disaster. This keeps water lines from freezing and keeps drains empty.

When drains show signs of freezing up, boiling a large pan of water on the stove and adding salt before slowly pouring it down the drain nearest where drainage pipes exit your house might help prevent frozen drain pipes if done soon enough.

If pipes, either water lines coming into your home, or drainage lines exiting your property freeze and burst, shut off all water as quickly as possible at the main water valve. Our building crew can help with this if needed.

SERVPRO of Marlboro / Concord is near Littleton, Acton, and Hudson when flood damage from frozen pipes or other sources occur. Call (978) 486-9868 for fast service that makes it all “Like it never even happened.”

How To Stay Safe After Flood Damage To Your Concord Home Until SERVPRO Arrives

Flood damage in a home is a dire situation as it can cause a host of safety issues before our technicians arrive on-scene to extract the water and perform restoration services on the property. First and foremost, we're concerned with the health and safety of homeowners before our emergency response team gets there.

When flood damage happens to Concord properties, there are some actions you can take before our technicians arrive that can help save property and keep you safe. If the storm damage to the home is from rainwater, it is considered a clean water category one water intrusion and does not pose a health threat to mop or use rags to blot up the water. If the water from the home is from groundwater, that is a category three biohazard, and you should avoid coming into contact with the water until it is tested to determine what, if any, contaminants are in it.

Common flood water dangers in the home include:
    •    Slip and fall hazards from wet flooring
    •    Electrical shock from water reaching wall plugs, if there is danger of shock, turn off the electricity to the home at the panel
    •    Move furniture off wet carpeting only if it is absolutely safe to do so if unable to move furniture, place a barrier between the furniture legs or base and wet carpeting to avoid stain bleeding
    •    Remove items unaffected directly by flood water from tabletops to a dry location
    •    Do not move saturated area rugs or attempt to remove carpeting as they can be an injury risk due to their weight
    •    Upholstered chair and sofa cushions may be removed and propped to prep for drying

Our Certified Professionals Have The Expertise To Handle Flood Damage Restoration In Marlborough

Our crew extracted the water damage to these hardwood floors when they discovered the water had traveled through the subfloor and into the basement.

Flood Damage from a Leaky Roof can Harm Your Entire House in Marlborough

Flooding that ruins the inside of a home in Marlborough does not always enter through the doorways. Heavy rainfall can end up inside a house. Entry points in the roof can soak the insulation and anything else in the area. Excess water can trickle down into your living area when unobstructed pathways permit this to happen.

At SERVPRO, when we get a call to mitigate a home in Marlborough of flood damage, we send out mitigation specialists with extensive experience and certifications from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). Our employees use technology to detect invasive water, measure its presence, and then to remove it from your home altogether, leaving it “Like it never even happened.”

Flooding that arrives at your home and passes over the threshold carries a multitude of contaminants. While the rain that gets pushed into a window does not carry the same threat that dirtier water does, the rain that travels through your home can carry several substances that the water either picks up or dissolves. This contamination that occurs inside your house can warrant the need for mitigation work similar to that needed for on-the-ground flooding.

Inside an attic, dust and microbes get swept into the water, as well as any traces of any chemicals added to the attic's interior. Chemicals from mothballs on the attic's floor or in clothing stored directly below a leaky area, for example, and other unwanted substances can make its way into your living space below. Because of the possibility of contamination, SERVPRO's flood damage specialists use decontamination methods to ensure your home gets not only dry but clean, too.

Below the attic, in the rooms occupied by your family, the use of infrared imaging cameras helps locate where the rain spread after coming into your house. With centrifugal air movers and other desiccation equipment, we remove the water that continues to damage and spread within the structure. How SERVPRO Will Limit The Damage Of A Storm In Littleton

4/11/2019 (Permalink)

Our crew extracted the water and removed the mold for this satisfied customer. We are available 24/7 so don't hesitate to call right away.

Littleton's Leading Provider of Flood Damage Restoration

Local restoration providers like ours are the first point of contact for residents who need assistance after flooding in their area. Anything can contribute to a flood but, regardless of the cause, the need to remedy damage and remove water quickly is essential. We offer the community an expert, efficient service to help get their home back to preloss conditions after a water emergency.

Over the years we have refined our output to suit the requirements of the community after flood damage in Littleton. In extreme cases, our team can pack out your possessions and relocate them to a nearby facility. This process can help to restore your property quicker, limit the damage as well as the opportunity to use ultrasonic cleaning equipment or Esporta washing machines to restore possessions.

In the majority of cases though, a flooding issue can be contained to a single area of the home. SERVPRO can then cordon off this area using physical barriers and move possessions into a designated clean room on site. An onsite procedure from start to finish is frequently more efficient than removing items from the site but still allows us to access critical areas of the property without obstruction.

When flood damage is the result of heavy rainfall or flash flooding there can often be debris as well as a microbial impact to consider. Typically, water from a flash flood has traveled a long distance, picking up a range of different microbes or pathogens along the way. SERVPRO technicians are trained in the safe removal and disposal of BioHazardous substances and can demolish sections of drywall that may have been infected by harmful bacteria; keeping your home clean and safe to inhabit.

SERVPRO uses an approach honed over years of experience in dealing with flood damages. First, we remove excess water using submersible gas pumps or water extractors. Then, we can adopt a targeted drying approach using dehumidifiers and rapid air movers to clear cavities as well as control humidity levels. Finally, we thoroughly deodorize the site using thermal foggers. The combination of these methods allows us to make the damage, "Like it never even happened."

Trust a professional service with your property and possessions, contact SERVPRO of Marlboro / Concord at (978) 386-9868 today.

Call Our Experts If Your Home In Concord Experiences A Flood Damage Disaster

2/6/2019 (Permalink)

Our SERVPRO of Marlboro / Concord rapid response team is available 24/7!

Recovering The Flooded Finished Basement Of Your Concord Home

For as many homes throughout the Concord area that contend with moisture in their basements, it is not a far stretch to find that many of these same lower levels are susceptible to flooding in the right conditions. With finished basements, this level beneath the main floor of your house is now a livable space and has many construction materials and contents that could become irreparably damaged very quickly when battling rising waters.

With the wide array of flood damages that can occur to your Concord finished basement over a brief period, you need fast acting mitigation services that can respond amid the disaster to effectively lessen potential losses. Our SERVPRO experts are available 24 hours a day to continually be ready for any disasters that could affect our communities or individual properties throughout our service area. With flooding, there is a finite timeline to prevent more pressing concerns like mold growth from developing.

Often flooding requires a good deal of demolition and reconstruction, and our SERVPRO team also includes licensed contractors. With their ability to assess the scope of the job, plan out the work accordingly, and to use software like Xactimate as your insurance provider uses, we can seamlessly transition between the mitigation, reconstruction, and necessary restoration work to make it “Like it never even happened.”

From the time that our experts arrive at your address, our initial focus becomes extraction, cleanup, and material removal. Extraction is key because many of the construction materials unaffected when we arrive could ultimately become damaged without the fast removal of pooling water from this lower level of your home. We have truck-mounted pumps and gas-powered pumps to effectively remove floodwaters and move on to other mitigation steps such as pack-outs and controlled demolition.

While flooding in your home might be something that many area residents are mindful of, the effect on a finished basement requires immediate action from trained and certified restoration specialists. Our SERVPRO of Marlboro / Concord rapid response team is available 24/7 by calling (978) 486-9868.

How We Avoid Restoration Challenges In Your Boxborough Home After A Flood

10/24/2018 (Permalink)

Though some places are easy to dry during flood damage restoration, it is not always the case in some areas.

Dealing With Possible Restoration Challenges In Boxborough After A Flood Damage Experience

Though some places are easy to dry during flood damage restoration, it is not always the case in some areas. For instance, it can be challenging to access the HVAC ducting that is located in the attic or ceiling area and perform the necessary restoration work. Also, drying walls and floors behind the cabinets can take a lot of time. Our crew has the training and equipment to clean, dry, and restore such areas in your Boxborough home or business.

Our SERVPRO technicians have to clean and decontaminated the HVAC systems in your Boxborough property during flood damage restoration. We can quickly clean and disinfect sheet metal ducting, but we have to replace some form of ducting such as flex duct and coated fiberboard after exposure to black or gray water. The type of material the duct is made from determines the procedures we use when restoring HVAC systems. If it has fiberglass insulation, there are high chances of mold growth taking place if the situation is not attended to immediately. In such cases, we replace the fiberglass lining since the molds may lead to health effects.

The layers of drywall and cabinet back can slow the speed of drying the area around the cabinet. If the cabinet back is absent, our SERVPRO technicians drill holes into the walls to enhance the flow of air. In some situations, we use a vent system to force dry air through the wall cavities. Once the area is dry, we cover those holes. It is also possible to drill holes in the cabinet back and then use a similar material to patch them up at the end of the work. Drilling holes may lead to possible electrical and plumbing hazards, so we are careful about that and follow applicable regulations and laws. Also, we communicate with our clients before we can make the holes.

Our highly trained team at SERVPRO of Marlboro / Concord responds immediately to all restoration emergencies, be it water, fire, mold, or storm damage. Call us at (978) 486-9868 when you need to work with a leader in the restoration industry.

Storm Damage Can Allow Flooding In Your Maynard Residence

7/25/2018 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO to Rescue Your Maynard Home after Flooding

Maynard Homeowners Call SERVPRO for Water Extraction and Drying after Stormy Incidents

Severe weather is no stranger to the state of Massachusetts, let alone to the residents of Maynard. From the heavy snowfall throughout the winter months to the torrential rainfall expected through the spring and summer months, homes take a beating all year round from these steady elements. Even with the reinforcement of roofs and exterior materials like siding, homes still fall victim to the severe weather and allow substantial volumes of runoff or floodwaters to enter their home.

While these unfortunate circumstances might come unexpectedly, knowing what to do when they happen can help to limit the flood damages that your Maynard home experiences. One of the first things that you should do is to know whom to call in the event of an emergency like this, and that is a professional restoration company like SERVPRO.

Floodwaters entering your home can quickly saturate the materials used in the construction of your house. If the water damage originates from the attic area, materials like insulation and ceiling framework can get too heavy to remain supported and collapse into the lower levels of your home. One of the SERVPRO goals is to make every job as safe as possible, which begins with assessing these risks along with the full scope of the damage that your home faces.

Another consideration is the removal and replacement of the materials too irreparably damaged for restoration to be practical or even possible. This assessment is one that takes a trained eye and experience to make, which can eliminate unessential costs and help to make the restoration process go more quickly. The final call for tossing non-salvageable materials, especially possessions and furnishings, is controlled by the homeowner and the insurance adjuster.  We can advise which areas of your home can get restored with drying efforts and cleanup and which require removal and replacement.

While there are no ways that you can prepare yourself for the potential flooding that can come from storm damages on the exterior of your house, there are ways that you can prepare for what you would do if such an occurrence happens. You should give our experienced SERVPRO of Marlboro / Concord restoration team a call immediately at (978) 486-9868.

Seasonal Storms Can Cause Flood Damage in Your Hudson Home

SERVPRO Can Replace Storm Damaged Insulation in Hudson Homes Along with Water Extraction and Drying

Floods from the Roof or Foundation Present Emergency Cleanups and Water Removal--Call the Professionals from SERVPRO

Spring brings a lot of rain to the State of Massachusetts, and the excessive volume of water has the potential to cause flood damage in any homes that are not adequately prepared. If the roof on your home is already in critical condition, a weekend of rain can quickly turn into a disaster for you. Water flooding into your attic can soak through the ceiling, causing water spots and rotting the material if it is not dealt with immediately. When water damage occurs inside of your home, it is always a wise decision to call for help immediately.

No part of your home is meant to withstand significant flood damage, but the attic of your Hudson home is particularly weak. Most attics are usually not finished, and it is never good if water has direct access to the bare structure of your property. Insulation and support beams can become waterlogged and turn into the perfect place for microbial growth in as little as 72 hours. If mold is allowed to form, it puts the structure in your home in even more damage, as mold rots organic material, such as the wooden frame of your home. The quicker you are to call for help, the more likely you are to have successful remediation.

After receiving your call, SERVPRO makes it our top priority to travel to your home quickly. When we arrive, we can bring trade tools with us to remove any pooling water from your home before drying out the structure. Insulation is relatively easy to dry and save, however, our SERVPRO techs may need to remove it to access water that has reached the sheetrock underneath it.  Our team has extensive experience with replacing wet or contaminated insulation. We use tools such as extractors and wet/dry vacuums to tackle any pooling water. Afterward, SERVPRO can employ the use of air movers, ventilation fans, and dehumidifiers to dry out the structure of your attic.

If your home suffers from flood damage, do not hesitate. Dial (978) 486-9868 to connect with SERVPRO of Marlboro / Concord. We understand how essential it is to arrive quickly and always strive to do so.

Insulation Removal From Marlborough Homes After a Storm

4/24/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Removes Insulation from Marlborough Homes After Soaking Storms

SERVPRO Provides Professional Services for Insulation Removal from Attics

Marlborough homes are now preparing for the summer heat. Winter storms are over, but their effects can result in high cooling bills and owners still sweltering in an uncomfortable home.

Insulation removal is necessary for Marlborough homes when their rolled or blown-in insulation starts to compress after stormwater soaks and begins to compress it. This may even lead to mold growth. If it is the original insulation, then it may have already begun deteriorating from age. That increases the effects of compression, and the insulation is barely more useful than stacks of newspapers. SERVPRO understands how the loss occurs and how to remove the damaged insulation safely.

Compression from stormwater reduces the R-value or thermal resistance. It measures how rapidly insulation and other building materials, such as siding, control heat. A high R-value indicates the insulation or other material prevents the transfer of heat into a home in the summer and keeps the heat inside a home in the winter.

The R-value lowers over time due to the natural breakdown of cellulose or fiberglass insulation fibers. Blown-in is more vulnerable than rolled insulation, and cellulose breaks down more quickly than fiberglass. Cellulose is also more common than fiberglass in homes over 25 years old. If you have owned your home for that long, or cannot determine the age of the insulation, you need to have a restoration service like SERVPRO examine it for age and compression from storms and animal infestation. To complicate the insulation materials available, mineral wool insulation can also cause rusting of stored items in an attic.

Regardless if it cellulose or the more expensive fiberglass, both potentially hazardous when removing them from attics and walls. Our restoration teams first don protective gear and then remove the bulk of the affected material using commercial grade vacuums and hoses. Every fiber is drawn out of the home and into specially designed storage bags to safely remove it without contaminating your home or the surrounding property.

The teams then move in with rakes and other tools to scrape out every inch of the insulation from the corners and low-points under the roof. If needed, they can switch to a smaller vacuum head to get farther into these tight areas.

Our goal at SERVPRO of Marlboro / Concord is to leave each homeowner with a clean, dry environment for new insulation. If you are not certain about your R-value, contact us today at (978) 486-9868. We are here to help.

Evacuating Before Flooding Crests in Hudson Could Avoid Some Safety Risks

3/13/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Suggests After Evacuation Due to Flooding, Call Us for Water Removal and Mitigation Services

SERVPRO Advises Residents in Hudson that Safety First Regarding Storm and Flood Conditions

While evacuating your home can be difficult in the face of a major storm, the safety benefits of such an action can often outweigh the deficits of leaving. Flood damage in Hudson can cause many dangerous and unpredictable consequences for people trapped in their homes, most of which can be avoided by temporarily evacuating to a safer area. Note that in some scenarios, staying in place may be less risky than seeking refuge elsewhere, especially if water blocks roadways. However, here are just a few of the risks you can avoid by vacating the area.

Fire Risk
Even with your home doused in water, flood damage can cause Hudson homes to catch fire in many different ways. Electrical fires can start when water reaches electronic devices and power outlets. Heat and lighting fixtures may be damaged and set fire to nearby materials if floodwaters hit them and knock them over. In some cases, chemical fires may start as substances both within and from outside the home combine and react negatively. If you are still in your home when a fire starts, it may be difficult to escape with a flood added into the mix.

Rising Water
While most floods come and go quickly, some especially disastrous events can leave you in a perilous situation as water rises. Direct contact with standing water can expose you to dangerous bacteria, viruses, other pathogens, and fungi, and if your home occupies a single story, avoiding this contact may be impossible in some cases. However, a two-story structure offers refuge from most floodwaters, as water depth rarely rises above a single floor.

Structural Instability
Floods can cause severe damage to the structural integrity of your home, even if it is a single story and of newer construction. Large volumes of water can rapidly disintegrate or even physically tear apart materials in your home, exacerbating existing problems and creating new ones. Particularly disastrous floods can even trap you in your home or cause personal injury. If you do remain in your home, try to stay on the high ground in a structurally stable location.
