SERVPRO Obeys Massachusetts Law for Asbestos Testing and Abatement Guidelines for Our Marlborough Customers
Why does the Commonwealth of Massachusetts require asbestos sampling before the demolition, renovation, or disruption of building materials? Please continue reading for an important message.
No matter how old your home is in Marlborough, it is always in danger of having asbestos. Asbestos contains the mineral Chrysotile that becomes fibers when woven together. When these fibers become airborne and are inhaled or ingested, they can be very harmful and dangerous, not only to the homeowner but the technicians as well. Airborne asbestos can cause lung cancer, mesothelioma, and other forms of cancer that can kill you.
In our colder climates, this material was utilized as a thermal insulator for furnaces, ductwork, pipes, ceiling or floor tiles, and even as a binder for joint compounds and textured paints. Very inexpensive, easy to use and unfortunately, discovered to be very toxic and harmful. Therefore, before demolition or renovations can begin in a home, asbestos sampling must take place. SERVPRO realizes that our customers what to get on with the work, but safety comes first. Plus, it is the law.
If the test comes back negative, then our SERVPRO technicians can get to work. But, with a positive result, we must call in a third-party asbestos company to do the required abatement. Isolating the carcinogenic materials and disposing of them without contaminating the surroundings is crucial to the process. Any material containing at least one percent of asbestos is considered ACM or asbestos-containing material. Any person who performs “asbestos abatement activities at the owner's residence...that contains suspect ACM must prior to conducting any demolition or renovation employ or engage an asbestos inspector...and prepare a written asbestos survey report.”(MassDEP). No matter how old the house is, Massachusetts requires asbestos sampling be done by law.
Our primary objective is to ensure the safety of our customers and technicians as well. We do not do this to upset our customers or annoy them, but instead, make sure our customers can be healthy and safe in the working environment. Trust the SERVPRO of Marlboro / Concord team to meet and beat your expectations even if you have to wait a few days for your final satisfaction. (978) 486-9868
